Or maybe there were, I do not remember clearly, but I remember you could shoot and it seemed like you could even aim. It was simply a scene like that.

It gave me a very strange, or rather, a very unique feeling. It was perhaps the first time I experienced this sense of being in a brand new world, possessing the free, limitless possibility to simply move around. This possibility of free movement was also tied to something foreign, a benchmark from abroad. I am guessing that back then, all these factors might have planted a tiny seed in my heart, a thought of wanting to go and see the rest of the world.

Secondly, this kind of endless, aimless, yet fully controllable demo could actually make you feel a bit empty and lonely. You could even say it felt abandoned, a sort of desolate feeling. It is just you, alone in this massive world, wandering back and forth. You have infinite freedom, you could just stop there and never come out. Even though I knew the world was procedurally generated, that generated world still felt infinite.

But it is exactly a scene like this that gives you a rootless sense of loss. In this world, you could do whatever you wanted to do, but you had absolutely no purpose. You did not know where to go, you did not know how it was supposed to end, and you did not know what kind of outcome your wandering around in there would even lead to. It is much like my early days studying in Rome. Despite being in the heart of such a massive city, I felt profoundly alone, drifting with a rootless mind, a mixture of melancholy, sadness, and similar quiet emotions. Although an empty digital landscape and a bustling foreign metropolis are completely different scenes, the emotional resonance I get from recalling them is remarkably similar.

That was the sense of loss I experienced back then. And this sense of loss, even fifteen or sixteen years later, I still remember so vividly. I think that is why 3DMark 06, aside from just being a benchmark, brought me this mix of emotions about the individual, the self, belonging, and culture. It brought up all these completely intertwined feelings. I think that is deeply fascinating, so I wanted to record it. I had been meaning to write this down for a long time but never had the chance. I figured I would take this opportunity to finally get it down.

In fact, after I moved to Italy in 2015, when I was trying to explain what a dragon was to a group of Italian students, I actually used that exact video of the 3DMark 06’s test scene. At the time, I felt it was very bizarre. It might have created a preconceived notion for them, because in Chinese culture, a dragon is definitely not the 3DMark 06 kind of dragon. It is not that massive, beastly monster suddenly bursting out of the water. But at the time, I just could not seem to find a better video to illustrate what a dragon was, so I went ahead and showed them that video. Even now, I am still curious about what my students were thinking back then.

I would add that encountering 3DMark 06 felt much like installing Windows 7 for the first time on that same computer. It was the feeling of moving on from Windows XP. Because I had been told that Windows XP was a stable system, I did not immediately switch to Windows 7. However, the first time I finally installed Windows 7 and booted up to the desktop, it was a breathtaking experience. It felt as if I had entered a new, futuristic, and technologically advanced world. It represented the future and something wonderful, even possessing a certain science fiction quality.

This feeling contrasted sharply with my reality in a rural area of Hubei, using a terrible Athlon X2 (I believe it was the 64 version) and a Colorful Technology 9500 GT on an HM510M motherboard. The graphics card actually had a pitifully small 128MB of video memory, making it a “watered-down” version. I vividly remember my father coming to the rented room near my high school on a motorcycle, carrying several large desktop computer boxes on the back. He told me, “I bought you a computer; it has a dedicated graphics card.” Through that machine, I seemed to be experiencing for the first time the true impact of a well-designed operating system: the high-resolution Windows 7 backgrounds, the frosted glass effect, and the exquisitely designed sound effects were incredible. I especially loved the sound effects when switching themes, as each theme had its own specific audio that played automatically during the transitions. The animations and the built-in themes, particularly those featuring different countries around the world, gave a profound sense of global unity. It felt as if the world were a true global village where every nation had its own unique characteristics, where all were equal, and where each deserved its own Windows 7 country theme. This stands in stark contrast to the present day.

I appreciated everything about Windows 7. Even now, I still use a wallpaper from the Windows 7 architecture theme on my Mac. It is the one featuring a bridge, seemingly a bridge in Australia. I even upscaled it to 4K resolution, since the original version’s maximum resolution was only 1080p.

That was just a long-ago, distance little side story.
